THE Durrow Scarecrow Festival was launched last Thursday in Durrow and is set to take place from Saturday July 28 to Monday August 6.

Formerly known as the Howya Festival, this year Durrow will play host to the third All Ireland Scarecrow Championships which sees over 120 competing scarecrows decorate the ‘Scarecrow Village’ and the streets of this picturesque village. With an overall prize fund of €3,000 with €1,000 going to the overall winner, competition is bound to be fierce. With over 12,000 people attending last year’s event, the Durrow Scarecrow Festival has become synonymous with family fun, good entertainment and value for money. It is being presented by Durrow Development Forum with the valued assistance of Laois Partnership and the support of Laois Tourism.

In addition to the wonderful scarecrows on exhibit there is something for all the family. There will be plenty of music, crafts, a summer camp, children entertainer, outdoor market, treasure hunt, sporting events, flower show, art exhibitions and a duck derby, to name but a few. Guaranteed to be big attractions at this year’s event are Adela & the Meanits, Woodbine, The Bare Soled Fools Theatre Group and the IWW Wrestling Warriors. For full details of the programme of events and how to enter the All Ireland Scarecrow Championships visit www.durrow.ie.

This is what I call a great value for the money and great family fun day, the street marketing was great with all kind of arts and crafts  and food to taste, the kind of event every children entertainer like me love to do.

Great town, amazing people, good idea putted all together, and the result is: the scarecrow festival.

Later I got this msg by e-mail:

Hi Jeca, thank you for coming to the Durrow Scarecrow Festival! Once again, you put back so many smiles on everybody’s face. You have the gift to adapt to any crowd, any individual… You definitely are “the” clown to get to get the party going…
